Storm Super Nova Review

The Storm Super Nova features the NeX solid cover and the same Ignition core at the original Nova. This statement summarizes the intent of the ball.

“Since surface plays such a pivotal role in ball reaction, we knew that we had to select just the right coverstock and finish in order to make the Super Nova live up to its billing. That’s why we selected NeX Solid Reactive for this big-hooking beast.”

Storm Super Nova Layout

I’ve thrown this ball for a few weeks now with a layout of 4 1/2 x 4 x 4, which puts the pin under my ring finger.

Results

The Storm Super Nova is a very smooth rolling ball with this layout.  I’ve found the NeX cover to have a wide footprint on the lane.  This combined with the Ignition core tends to make the ball roll earlier and smoother.  For me the Super Nova works the best when I need to ball to start a little sooner. This helps me get the ball to go very forward down the lane to maximize pin carry.  If it picks up too early it will hit a little flat due to the cover. As with any strong ball, you have to know when to get around this ball or go to a ball with more length.

It’s a fantastic ball on any pattern where there is a lot of oil in the front of the lane.  This is when you need the cover to get it to stand up early.  If I had another one pin up I could use it playing deeper and “going around” the pattern.  It will play well on longer patterns as well, depending on the volume of oil.

Conclusion

The Super Nova is designed for a lot of oil or other situations where you need a lot of cover and a lot of early roll.  It’s found a place in my arsenal that I was missing, and with a weaker core than the Proton PhysiX, it doesn’t slow down quite as quick which enables you to use it with a little more friction on the lane when needed.
