Watch the ball go through the pins. The ball will “split” the 8-9 pins if your ball reaction is the best it can be. If you see the ball go through the 9 pin for a right-handed bowler the ball either A) lost too much energy (hooked too soon) or B) deflected going through the pins (hooked too late). Even after a strike, it is important to watch the ball go through the pins to make adjustments for future shots.
